To say that living in Connecticut, particularly here in Southport, has so far been interesting, is a total understatement. Just ask Norm. Aside from living in Legaspi for a couple of years in the late 70's, he's lived mostly in Ohio, with a couple of gigs in West Viriginia and Florida - making him a true Midwesterner. Which is why he is definitely having a reaction here.
Southport is actually part of Fairfield, but insists on having their own name and be its own town. The city of Fairfield's claim to fame is that it made it to the Top 10 Best Places to live in the US. But even that did not make Southport jump up and down with joy and join in - you all get the idea.
So, Southport is where we found a house to live in - while we're trying to decide whether to buy or rent. Given the current housing market, we're leaning towards renting and keeping our money in a safer place than real estate. I'm sure that others will disagree, but for now, that's where we are.
The house is in a very busy street, a spitting distance from I-95 and the Metro North train station - making it very attractive to the NYC commuters.
We've lived here 3 months and we've already made a remarkable impression on the neighbors. The neighbor across the street, a single woman in her 50's is prejudiced against renters so she has decided to treat us like gypsies.
The guy on our right, a single man (also in his 50's), lives with his mom, refused to cut his hedges by my driveway (long story) so I had to ask the Fairfield officials to cut it for him. So now, he's not talking to us either. But like I told the Chief of Police - I don't really care if he does not like me, as long as I'm alive - 2 close calls in 1 week did it for me.
Norm and I know for a fact that majority of people in Connecticut - even Southport are nice to their fellow human beings. We just got very lucky that 1% of them are our current neighbors. So the saga continues.
Meanwhile, Norm and I will keep on being ourselves, "this weird couple from Ohio who are just renting a tiny house".
